In 2021 the U.S. saw $26.5 billion in annual cannabis sales. That number is estimated at nearly $33 billion in 2022. Of that number, $11.9 billion accounts for the sale of medical cannabis, and the remaining $21.1 billion is for the adult-use market.

The recent opening of the adult-use market is causing a massive surge in numbers, with industry experts predicting the market will be worth $81.6 billion by the end of the decade.

Cannabis cultivations will top 48.8 million pounds this year, according to a report from Whitney Economics. The same report also predicts that legal cannabis will overcome the illicit market starting in 2026.

According to the 2022 U.S. Cannabis Report, approximately 52 million Americans have consumed cannabis. Projections show an increase in cannabis consumption to 60 million by 2026 and over 70 million Americans by the end of the decade.

A report from the Pew Research Center found that only one in ten Americans believed cannabis should not be legal in the U.S. The survey found that of those in favor of legalization, 50% believed it should be legal for recreational and medical use, whereas 30% believed it should be legal for medical use only.

Of those surveyed, Americans in the 75 and older age group were most likely to oppose cannabis legalization. Those in the 18 to 29 age group were 92% in favor of some form of legalization.

Cannabis Industry Jobs in 2022

According to the Leafly jobs report, the U.S. cannabis industry is currently supporting 428,059 jobs. This is a massive increase from 2021 when the industry supported 321,000 full-time positions.

Bonus: the report also found that Americans spent more money on cannabis than they did on milk, energy drinks, or orange juice.
