How Product Intelligence Changes Underwriting

Why I Believe Product Intelligence Is the Biggest Innovation in Merchant Underwriting History

I've spent the last 33 years in the payments industry.

Noah Fitzgerald, CPP - Chief Revenue Officer, Qredible, Inc.

During that time, I've worked with some of the largest payment processors in the world, helped launch fintech startups, built underwriting programs, managed merchant portfolios, and worked alongside hundreds of underwriters, risk managers, compliance officers, sponsor banks, and sales organizations.

I've watched our industry evolve through ecommerce, payment gateways, PCI, EMV, smart terminals, mobile payments, digital wallets, real-time payments, AI, and countless regulatory changes.

Every one of those innovations changed how we process payments.

But none of them fundamentally changed how we decide who should be trusted to process payments.

Until now.

After three decades in this industry, I believe Product Intelligence represents the single greatest advancement in merchant underwriting history.

That may sound like a bold statement.

Let me explain why.

We've Been Looking at Merchants Through the Wrong Lens

For decades, merchant underwriting has been built around answering a series of familiar questions.

Who owns the business?

Is it legally registered?

Does it have good credit?

Is it on MATCH?

What is its MCC?

What documents have been provided?

These are all important questions.

But there has always been one question hiding beneath the surface.

Ironically, it's the question we've never been very good at answering.

What exactly is this merchant selling?

Not what they say they sell.

Not what their application says.

Not what their MCC implies.

What they are actually selling today.

Because that is where risk truly begins.

Products Create Risk

Risk doesn't originate from an industry.

It originates from products.

A restaurant isn't risky because it's a restaurant.

It becomes risky when it begins selling THC-infused beverages.

A medical practice isn't high risk because it's a doctor's office.

It becomes higher risk when it launches an ecommerce store selling CBD, peptides, or compounded wellness products.

A smoke shop isn't risky because of its storefront.

Its risk depends entirely on whether it's selling compliant hemp products, kratom, nicotine alternatives, mushrooms, or products prohibited by processor policy.

The same is true for wellness clinics, liquor stores, beauty retailers, pharmacies, online marketplaces, and countless other businesses.

The product—not the industry—is what determines compliance obligations, documentation requirements, regulatory exposure, and payment risk.

Yet underwriting has historically been designed to classify businesses rather than understand what they sell.

The Blind Spot We've All Accepted

Looking back, I think our industry accepted a limitation because we didn't have a practical alternative.

Reviewing an entire product catalog was simply impossible.

Websites contained hundreds—or thousands—of products.

Labels changed.

Marketing changed.

States changed regulations.

New products appeared every week.

No underwriting department had the time or resources to continuously monitor all of it.

So we simplified.

We relied on industry classifications.

Merchant Category Codes.

Questionnaires.

PDFs.

Self-disclosures.

Sampling.

Those methods served us well in a different era.

But commerce has changed.

The tools have not.

AI Didn't Create the Revolution

Artificial Intelligence has unquestionably accelerated underwriting.

Documents can be summarized.

Applications reviewed.

Policies referenced.

Workflows automated.

These are meaningful improvements.

But AI doesn't automatically understand merchant risk.

It understands the information we give it.

If that information lacks context, the outcome lacks context.

The breakthrough isn't AI.

The breakthrough is giving AI the right intelligence.

That's where Product Intelligence changes everything.

Product Intelligence Changes the Entire Underwriting Process

Imagine beginning every underwriting review with a complete understanding of a merchant's business.

Every product identified.

Every category classified.

Every regulated item recognized.

Every marketing claim analyzed.

Every required Certificate of Analysis located—or missing.

Every policy requirement mapped.

Every finding supported with evidence.

Before a human underwriter opens the file.

Suddenly underwriting becomes fundamentally different.

Instead of searching for risk, teams begin managing it.

Instead of collecting evidence, they evaluate it.

Instead of asking merchants for information one email at a time, remediation begins automatically before underwriting review.

That's not simply faster underwriting.

It's better underwriting.

Underwriting Becomes Operational Intelligence

Product Intelligence extends far beyond onboarding.

Merchants change.

Products change.

Packaging changes.

Ownership changes.

Marketing changes.

Regulations change.

Traditional underwriting captures a moment in time.

Product Intelligence creates a living understanding of the business.

That changes how organizations think about merchant onboarding, portfolio management, compliance, audit preparation, and risk monitoring.

Underwriting is no longer an event.

It becomes an ongoing source of operational intelligence.

The Impact Goes Far Beyond Compliance

Most people assume Product Intelligence is about reducing risk.

It is.

But that's only the beginning.

When payment companies truly understand what merchants sell, they can:

  • Approve merchants faster.
  • Reduce manual underwriting effort.
  • Eliminate unnecessary enhanced due diligence.
  • Identify hidden compliance issues before onboarding.
  • Improve audit readiness.
  • Reduce portfolio risk.
  • Detect meaningful changes automatically.
  • Support sales with greater confidence.
  • Shorten onboarding from weeks to hours.
  • Create a better merchant experience.

Product Intelligence doesn't simply improve underwriting.

It transforms the economics of merchant onboarding.

A New Era for Financial Institutions

I believe banks, payment processors, ISOs, lenders, insurers, and card brands are entering a new era.

For years, we've invested in making underwriting more efficient.

The next decade will be about making underwriting more intelligent.

Organizations that continue relying primarily on applications, questionnaires, and industry classifications will always struggle to understand what merchants actually do.

Those that embrace Product Intelligence will operate with greater confidence, stronger compliance, faster onboarding, and significantly better visibility into their portfolios.

The gap between those two approaches will only continue to widen.

Why We Built Qredible

This realization became the foundation for Qredible.

We didn't start by asking how to automate underwriting.

We asked a different question.

What if underwriters could understand every merchant before the first document was ever reviewed?

That question led us to build Q-Scan, a technology designed to discover and analyze the publicly available intelligence surrounding a business—from products and websites to marketing, compliance documentation, ownership, reputation, and much more.

But discovery was only the first step.

The real challenge was operationalizing that intelligence.

Q-Trust transforms Product Intelligence into action by mapping findings to underwriting policies, automating merchant remediation, organizing evidence, prioritizing exceptions, and continuously monitoring merchants as they evolve.

The result isn't another underwriting report.

It's a continuously updated Merchant Risk Intelligence profile that supports every stage of the merchant lifecycle—from pre-vetting and underwriting to onboarding, compliance, monitoring, and audit readiness.

Looking Ahead

After thirty-three years in this industry, I've never been more optimistic about the future of merchant underwriting.

Not because AI is replacing people.

Not because automation is making processes faster, more accurate, consistent, and all backed with evidence.

But because, for the first time, we have the ability to understand merchants at the level that truly matters.

Through the products they sell.

I believe history will look back on Product Intelligence the same way it looks at EMV, ecommerce, and digital payments—not as another feature or workflow improvement, but as the beginning of an entirely new chapter.

The companies that lead the next generation of financial services won't simply process payments more efficiently.

They will understand merchants more completely than ever before.

And that understanding will become the foundation for faster approvals, stronger compliance, better portfolio performance, and a safer, more trusted payments ecosystem.

That's why I believe Product Intelligence isn't just another innovation.

It's the future of underwriting.
