as diagnosed with cancer and given just three months to live. As a successful professional in Hollywood visual effects who had held multiple Oscars, Dass suddenly faced a reality check about what truly mattered.
"I thought, you know, like I'm a tech guy. I understand the technology... That was the moment of realization that I understood that I don't understand this body," Dass recalled. This awakening led him to explore holistic approaches to support his mother's conventional treatment.
His dedication paid off. Through a combination of immunity support, organic food, natural lifestyle changes, and strong emotional backing, his mother lived more than five years beyond her prognosis. Before she passed, doctors confirmed her cancer was "almost gone."
"That was a moment of realization, and I'm like, this pain, I should not let it go. I should keep this pain here, and I should make something much bigger for society," Dass shared.
The supplement industry faces significant credibility challenges. As Fitzpatrick noted during the interview, "A 2024 analysis by nutritionfacts.org found that 80% of supplement manufacturers are engaging in some form of unethical labeling or marketing practice."
Wellness Extract stands apart through rigorous third-party verification. Dass explained their process: "In our company, we have a third-party company in Canada who every year audit our entire SOPs, revise entire SOPs, and also does third-party testing with multiple different labs to understand the variation."
This commitment to verification extends beyond their own products. When Wellness Extract tested 12 competitor products claiming to contain tocotrienol (vitamin E), they discovered 70% were "entirely fake" and most others contained significantly less active ingredient than claimed.
"We informed FDA, we have all those case numbers, case IDs. We reported it to Amazon as well," Dass said, demonstrating his commitment to industry-wide accountability.
Unlike many supplement companies focused solely on sales volume, Wellness Extract promotes a surprising message: supplements should be taken only when necessary.
"Our goal is, you know, we want to give people health in a way that they don't have to rely on supplements. You should only be taking supplements when it's needed. If you can supplement that with real food, then why not? Lifestyle change, why not?" Dass emphasized.
This philosophy stems from his personal experience spending roughly "$5,000 just on supplements" monthly during his mother's illness. This customer-first approach, while seemingly counterintuitive for a supplement company, builds deeper trust with consumers.
Wellness Extract's approach combines traditional knowledge with modern validation. Dass, who draws from his Indian heritage and Ayurvedic traditions, believes in balancing ancient wisdom with scientific verification.
"Our biggest issue is that our system is not even designed to treat the cause. It is only designed to treat the symptoms," Dass noted, explaining the gap his products aim to fill.
Rather than simply selling isolated compounds, his company focuses on understanding how supplements work holistically within the body and supporting the body's natural processes.
The path forward requires collaboration across multiple stakeholders. According to Dass, creating a trustworthy supplement industry requires:
"There is a big gap because whenever any studies comes in a market, it comes in a technical language," Dass explained. "It's very difficult to translate that technical message into layman's language without breaking the laws... We have to create a system where doctors can come forward and educate patients."
Dass's commitment extends beyond his business. He and his wife have established Santosh Care Foundation, a nonprofit supporting cancer patients in Canada. "We have decided that... at least 90% of our wealth we are going to donate to this society, and this society is going to support cancer patients," he shared.
This philanthropic extension perfectly encapsulates his guiding philosophy: "The purpose of life is not to be important, but to be useful."
For supplement brands seeking to build lasting trust, Dass's example provides a clear roadmap: start with a genuine purpose, maintain unwavering quality standards, prioritize education, and remain committed to making a positive impact beyond profit margins.
The authentic founders in the supplement industry, like Dass, demonstrate that when personal mission drives business decisions, both consumers and companies benefit.
